Principal Contractors

Contractors and any workers under their control (including subcontractors) are most at risk of injury and ill health from construction work. Contractors, therefore, have an important role in planning, managing and monitoring works to make sure any - and all - risks are controlled.

Principal contractors must:

  • Plan, manage, monitor and co-ordinate health and safety in the construction phase of a project

  • This includes liaising with the client and principal designer, preparing the construction phase plan and organising and managing co-operation between contractors and the individual elements of work they are doing.

  • Make sure suitable site inductions are provided and that reasonable steps are taken to prevent unauthorised access to the site

  • Engage and consult with workers to make sure they have the best chance to stay safe and healthy while at work.

At Saxon Safety, we can help you with all these areas.

We can help you write your site induction and construction phase plan, and we can help you create risk assessments and method statements too.

A subcontractor is a person or business in charge of doing a specific part of the construction work, and under the CDM regulations, you have a duty to plan, manage and monitor the work you’re responsible for.

If a subcontractor works for a principal contractor, they may also have extra responsibilities.

If you’re a subcontractor, you’ll be a vital part of the success of most projects, and we help many subcontractors, from all trades, to make sure they manage their risks on site.

We do this by:

  • Helping create risk assessments, method statements and health and safety policies

  • Making sure you fulfil all your legal obligations

  • Helping you comply with any additional requirements set out by the principal contractor.

Principal Designers

As a principal designer, your duty is to plan, manage, monitor and co-ordinate any health and safety issues within the pre-construction phase of a project.

This includes identifying, eliminating and controlling potential risks and making sure any designers provide the necessary information to other duty holders.

You also need to provide relevant information to the principal contractor to help them plan, manage, monitor and coordinate health and safety in the construction phase of the project.

At Saxon Safety, we can help you:

  • Create a project risk register and design risk assessments

  • Prepare and provide the information needed for the construction phase of the project.

Contact us today to discuss your needs or find out more.

As a client, you must make suitable arrangements to manage a project and make sure that duty holders are appointed and sufficient time and resources are allowed for them to do their jobs safely.

You must also make sure:

  • All the relevant information is prepared and provided to other duty holders

  • The principal designer and principal contractor carry out their duties correctly and provide welfare facilities where necessary.

At Saxon Safety, we can help you carry out competency checks before choosing contractors and make sure you satisfy all your legal requirements.
